SZA is an American singer-songwriter who originally hails from St Louis, Missouri. She's been instrumental in masterfully colouring outside and within the lines of how soulfully-rooted music and other elements of genres are beautifully fused together. This sound has created, what some has helmed as, a new genre called “alternative” or “progressive” R&B that has smoothly infiltrated itself into mainstream airwaves. Placing politics of genre-labelling aside, one thing is for sure. SZA’s heartfelt and honest songwriting paired with the music production surrounding her powerful and thoughtful vocal delivery have continued to be ethereal, soul-stirring and relevant.
With her credibility rising on the music scene after her self-released mixtape "See.SZA.Run" in 2012, a year later Top Dawg Entertainment (TDE) signed her to its label that has produced the likes of Kendrick Lamar, ScHoolboy Q, Ab-Soul and Jay Rock. As the First Lady of TDE’s camp, there was much anticipation leading up to her debut studio album. Earlier this year, there were minor disputes regarding the multiple delays for her project release date. However, yesterday fans’ prayers were answered and SZA’s album “Ctrl” was released as a 14-track, beautiful work of art that is poignant, raw and introspective, to say the least, of modern-day situations millennials can find ourselves in. Touching on different aspects of romantic relationships, revenge flings, disappointments, self discovery and managing insecurities, SZA invites us to sonically witness her relatable journey of removing layers and owning her thoughts, her voice, and complexities of what makes her, her.
SZA will be going on tour soon where where she will be performing songs from her latest project.
